Ponsa Appo / Jackfruit Dumplings

Ponsa Appo is a konkani breakfast/snack dish prepared out of ripe jackfruit. "Ponosu" means ripe jackfruit and Appo is a small dumpling baked in appam patram or Appe Kaili. This dish is sweet to taste and the flavor of jackfruit make this dish more delicious. You can get appam patram in any shop in India. You can also buy online in some of the online shopping sites.

Ingredients :

Jackfruit Pods (Chopped)
फली कटहल (कटा हुआ)

Grated Coconut
किसा हुआ नारियल

1/4 Cup or as per taste
Cardamom (Crushed)
इलायची पाउडर
1/2 tbsp
तेल/ घी
2 tbsp
Cashew Nut (Optional)
काजू (ऐच्छिक)
A Pinch

Preparation :

  1. Remove the seeds from the jackfruit pods and chop them into tiny pieces.
  2. Grind chopped jackfruit, grated coconut along with jaggery using blender. Do not add water while grinding and we need a smooth paste of this mixture.
  3. Transfer grounded paste in a bowl, add semolina, a pinch of salt, roasted cashew nut and crushed cardamom. Add water and adjust the batter to a required consistency. It should be thick but should be of dropping consistency.
  4. Heat Appam Patram in a medium flame. Add oil into each small moulds and fill them with batter. Close with a lid and cook the dumplings in a low flame.
  5. You can also use ghee instead of oil. After few minutes open the lid sprinkle few drops of oil/ghee and turn the dumplings. Cook other side of the dumplings same way until you get golden brown color both sides.
  6. Serve them plain with the cup of hot tea/coffee.
